What is KUSUDAMA?

🌸 The Japanese KUSUDAMA is a paper model that is usually stylized flowers folded from square paper together through their points to form a spherical shape. Alternately the individual components may be glued together. Occasionally, a tassel is attached to the bottom for decoration.

🌸 KUSUDAMA originated in ancient Japanese culture and was used for incense and chowder. The word "KUSUDAMA " itself is a combination of two Japanese words kusuri (medicine) and tama (ball). Now, they are usually used as decorations or gifts.

🌸 KUSUDAMA is very important in origami, especially as the predecessor of the modular origami type. It is often confused with modular origami, but it is not because the units are strung together or glued together, rather than folded together like most modular structures.

🌸 Modern origami masters such as Tomoko Fuse have created new KUSUDAMA designs that are entirely assembled without cutting, glue or thread except as a hanger.
